What is the IPCC?

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was founded in 1988 by the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) and the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO). Although the IPCC is a scientific organisation, it does not conduct any research itself but rather summarizes scientific findings on climate change. These are published every few years in the form of an assessment report. Work on the fifth report is currently in progress, due to be published in 2013/2014. To date assessment reports have been published 1990, 1995, 2001 and 2007. “Because of its scientific and intergovernmental nature, the IPCC embodies a unique opportunity to provide rigorous and balanced scientific information to decision makers. By endorsing the IPCC reports, governments acknowledge the authority of their scientific content.” (https://www.ipcc.ch). All IPCC reports are available here.
