The institutional framework for nature conservation on farmland

Summary

The article analyses the institutional framework for the implementation of conservation objectives on farmland. Several regulative, economic, planning, participative and informational instruments co-ordinate societal claims of conservation and land use. The article discusses the strengths and weaknesses of these instruments and highlights potentials for amore successful implementation. Conclusions are drawn on recent institutional changes with regard to co-ordination mechanisms, formal regulations and societal rules as well as to organisations involved in nature conservation.
