Texas blackout deciphered with the aid of environmental statistics

Was the 2021 Texas blackout event unpredictable or yet preventable? The BOKU study, just published in the journal Nature Energy, combines methods of environmental economy with extreme value statistics of low flow hydrology to estimate the occurrence risk of a new winter blackout in Texas.
