Time course and impact of operating factors on return-to-oestrus rates in pig breeding units of an Austrian producer group

Summary

In this study the seasonal variation of return-to-oestrus rates in pig breeding units of a producer group during the years 2006 to 2010 was analysed. The “summer infertility syndrome” could be noticed. Furthermore, relations between operating factors and return-to-oestrus rates were examined. The following operating factors proved to be significant as far as the variation of the return-to-oestrus rates is concerned: type of vaccination, insemination method, type of ceiling in the farrowing stable, number of responsible persons for pregnancy detection, type of floor and of water supply in the mating area. Key words: pig breeding, return-to-oestrus rate, summer infertility syndrome, operating factors, producer group, Austria.
