Why are BOKU climate protection projects implemented in ‘developing’ countries?

Comparatively small projects and initiatives in counties where few projects have been implemented to date – particularly least developed countries (LDCs) - are often unviable because of the volume of transaction costs involved in certification. However, the effect of knowledge and technology transfer on climate protection and the establishment of sustainable systems can be particularly high (and is particularly needed) in such countries. Through participatory research, it is hoped to generate a high level of acceptance and permanent improvement of project results.
Furthermore, the costs of carbon offsetting are considerably higher in industrialized nations – due to higher wages and material costs – than in ‘developing’ nations.
