Interpretation of German and Polish soil assessment data in order to deduce and to evaluate soil parameters and functions

Part I: Methodical basis and database

Summary

The availability of historical German and Polish soil assessment data for the Polish territory is considered with special attention to the historical background. Furthermore, a description of the Polish soil assessment system is given, focusing on the standardized typification of sites which is primarily based on soil assessment. One decisive parameter for classifying and evaluating important soil functions is the available water capacity. Against this backdrop the methodological basis for determining the available water capacity in the root zone according to German and Polish soil textural group classification is shown. The derivation and extensive large-scale imaging of soil characteristics and functions used for landscape planning and spatial planning purposes is based on the highly significant relationship between the agricultural land use suitability and the available water capacity in the root zone. Key words: Soil assessment data, available water capacity in the root zone, Germany, Poland.
