This seminar addresses all employees who want to enhance their intercultural skills.

Objectives:

  • Participants develop new perspectives and a new understanding of working in intercultural settings (teaching and research)
  • Participants develop an understanding of the dimensions of intercultural competence and can transfer this to intercultural contexts they work in
  • Participants practice navigating cultural differences and interpreting possible cultural causes for misunderstandings in their own work environment

Content:

This workshop aims to introduce participants to strategies in order to successfully build bridges across diverse cultures in intercultural environments, with a focus on the context of higher education (student-teacher relationships, cultural diversity in departments, intercultural communication in research projects, etc). The goal is to provide participants with enhanced cultural sensitivity and (self-)awareness and practical tools to develop positive intercultural relationships, both face-to-face and online.

Topics:
Understanding and Contextualizing Cultural Identities
Language and Cultural Communication Styles
Nonverbal Codes and Cultural Space
Developing Intercultural Communication Skills (online and offline)

Methods:

The workshop design is based on creating and developing cultural competency and awareness within an intergroup dialogue format, using a mix of pedagogical methods and the inclusion of a broad range of media (e.g. videos, podcasts, online resources) to support learning as well as personal reflection processes.

The methods include:
Working on topics in (small) groups, critical reflection and critical incident analysis, community-building activities, buddy coaching, and role play/simulation. In the online setting via ZOOM additional emphasis is placed on an interactive online socialization phase and the use of varied digital tools for the individual and collaborative development of the content (e.g. using audience response systems or cyberstorming).

Group size: max. 14 participants

The workshop will take place online via ZOOM.

MMag. Dr. Simone Adams
is a diversity trainer and educator who has been teaching and doing research in Europe and the USA in the fields of Diversity and Intersectionality, Cultural Studies, and Gender Studies for 14 years. She holds a Ph.D. in American Studies and has received interdisciplinary training in Communication Studies, both of which influence her workshops and professional trainings. She is currently the head of the Department of Instructional Design at the Center for Digital Teaching and Learning at the University of Graz.
