Ryanodine receptors (RyRs) form a class of intracellular calcium channels in various forms of excitable animal tissues like muscles and neurons. It is the major cellular mediator of calcium-induced calcium release in animal cells. There are multiple isoforms of ryanodine receptors with RyR1 being primarily expressed in skeletal muscle. In close cooperation with Prof. Martin Hohenegger (MedUniWien), RyR1 is isolated from rabbit muscle and subsequently reconstituted in long-term stable S-layer supported lipid membranes.
