The voltage-dependent anion channel (VDAC) is a pore in the outer mitochondrial membrane. It comprises a protein in the form of a beta barrel that is closed at membrane potentials above 30 to 40 mV. Below that, it opens and allows the exchange of ions and molecules between the mitochondria and cytosol.  This is critical for the normal function of the mitochondria and also serves to regulate mitochondrial apoptosis.  In ths project, we use bacterial S-layer proteins to tether artificial membranes to a substrate. VDAC is then synthesised and inserted into these membranes to form voltage-responsive channels.
