Understand to stand through: Suburbanization as a topic for participatory research

Summary

Suburbanization is a powerful trend, which entails overly use of resources and rising public costs. There is no way to stop this trend; we should develop new, appropriate, environmentally, socially and economically sound settlement patterns, which lie beyond the antiquated dichotomy of “urban” and „rural”. Co-operation between municipalities will be necessary, but not sufficient. A further step, integrating local enterprises into these partnerships, will have to be made. Key words: Suburbanization, local development, intercommunal co-operation, rural development, spatial planning.
