In addition to a one-year period (1990-91) as a Visiting Scholar at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA, during his Doctorate Studies, he has been a Pos-doctoral fellow in The Netherlands (University of Eindhoven, 1996-97) and in Portugal (University of Minho, 2002-03) and a Visiting Professor at the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Malaysia (2008), and at the University of Minho, Portugal (2009). As an advisor of graduate studies, Dr. Rodrigues da Silva has already guided forty-two Master’s students (forty-one in Brazil and one in Portugal) and sixteen Doctorates. He has also guided thirty-six projects of scientific initiation for undergraduate students.

His major areas of interest include Planning for sustainable urban mobility, Education in urban and transportation planning, and Spatial analysis and GIS applications of emergent techniques in urban and transportation planning.  He is now particularly interested in issues of urban and transportation planning applied to developing countries, such as (1) the practical implementation of sustainable mobility strategies, (2) resilience of urban transportation systems, and (3) the challenges of universal accessibility in urban areas and its impacts on mobility and transportation systems.
