On 17 May, visitors to Tulln can experience how the implementation of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) can look like.

Under the title "City and Country and Thinking the Future", the third Agenda 2030 Conference will take place this year on 17 May on the grounds of the Garden of Tulln in Lower Austria. Visitors can immerse themselves in 20 SDG experience spaces and learn from examples from all over Austria how the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals can be implemented.

The conference is a cooperation event within the framework of the Sustainability Coordination Austria, organised by the Ministry of Climate Protection together with the province of Lower Austria and the partners Austrian Association of Cities and Towns and Austrian Association of Municipalities.

The focus is on exchange and trial and error. The Institute of Waste Management represents BOKU and presents Goal 14 "Life below water". "Rivers are considered the main entry pathways for plastic waste into the oceans. Sources, transport routes and environmental impacts in rivers have been insufficiently researched so far. In Tulln we will show how much and which types of plastic float in the Danube, where it comes from and how it behaves in the water and on the shore, but also what can be done about it," explains Gudrun Obersteiner from the Institute of Waste Management (ABF) at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna.

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

At the UN Summit in New York in September 2015, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was adopted. This agenda contains 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which aim to achieve ecological, social and economic sustainability in equal measure and apply to both industrialised nations and developing and emerging countries. The 17 goals do not stand on their own, but are linked through a variety of interactions. All member states have committed themselves to advancing the implementation of the SDGs at national, regional and international level by 2030.
