01.02. [9:00 - 15:00] and 21. + 22.03.2024 [9:00 - 13:00]

The seminar addresses young scientists who have no experience with writing peer reviews.

Objectives:

Learn how to peer review a scientific manuscript that a journal asked you to evaluate and how to prepare a review report

Content:

Never done a peer review? But asked by a journal to do one?!?

As soon as you have published your first paper you are "on the market" for peer review. With your first paper it becomes clear that you are working in a certain scientific field and hence, should be able to evaluate the work done by others working in the same field. Journals desperately search for such new peer reviewers because established scientists are already overloaded with manuscripts to evaluate.

Be prepared for this by learning how to conduct a good and scientifically correct peer review.

DAY 1 - Theoretical input:

  • What’s peer review? Roles and responsibilities of a reviewer, types of peer review, peer review ethics, gain for the reviewer
  • How to decide to say YES or NO when asked by a journal to review a manuscript?
  • How to do the review? Section by section - from Title to Reference List
  • How to write the report? Formal aspects, reviewer’s etiquette

Bring your own manuscripts to get a peer review from your colleagues: On DAY 1 we will pick sections from your manuscripts to be analysed by your colleagues until DAY 2 (= homework)

DAY 2 and 3 - Practical work:

  • The peer reviews on your manuscripts will be discussed in the group
  • You will get feedback on parts of your manuscripts and on your reviews

Methods:

Online lecture, discussion, practical exercises

Group size: max. 12 participants

The workshop will take place online via ZOOM.
