The seminar is addressed to first stage researchers (before dissertation and with completed master's degree) and postdocs.

Objectives:

We take a close look at the word in English scientific writing, specifically how using the right words is essential to creating more precise, concise, native-like, and of course compelling text. Through examples and hands-on exercises, we practice wordsmithing skills that will enable you to get your message across clearly and persuasively.

Content:

Optimizing your text: How to be concise and precise
Using synonyms effectively
Strong action verbs and using tenses strategically
Judiciously mixing Anglo-Saxon and Latinate words
Hedging and boosting words  
Logical or transition words and phrases
Frequently misused words and expressions
Practical exercises and online word tools

Methods:

PowerPoint presentation, discussion, group and peer work, sentence analysis and revision, sentence exercises, self-review

Group size: max. 12 participants

The workshop will take place online via ZOOM.

Dr. Katherine Tiede
has spent more than three decades working with engineers and scientists from a range of fields on how to communicate their research.  In her work, she draws on her background in linguistics to provide scientists with tools to be able to read their own writing like a reader as well as tools to draft, write, and revise effectively. She completed her Ph.D. at the University of Toronto and after a decade as faculty in the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering, began to give annual seminars at Austrian universities such as the University of Vienna, Vienna University of Technology, Graz University of Technology, the Medical University of Graz, the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz, University of Klagenfurt, and the Medical University of Innsbruck.
