Workshop “Citizen Science and Law“

Workshop “Citizen Science and Law“

Annemarie Hofer, BOKU Institute of Law, presented the results of her master’s thesis “Privacy within Citizen Science Projects,” as part of the Workshop “Citizen Science and Law”. The workshop took place on the 11th and 22nd of January, and was organised by the Research Service of the University of Vienna. The results are also found in the Top-Citizen Science Project “Earth Construction in the Weinviertel”.

Citizen Science is a steadily-growing scientific field, which has received enthusiasm from both participants and scientists. Through the active involvement of ”citizens”, scientific outcomes are achieved that could not be reached without the participants’ broad support. Most of the time, however, citizen involvement  has led to the processing of personal data, which is protected under Austrian privacy law. To guarantee compliance with data protection law, legal aspects must be considered and applied accordingly.

The workshop focused on common mistakes concerning privacy within citizen science projects and how to avoid them.
