Short summary
Today the Austrian timber industry belongs to the leading economic sectors in Austria, its balance of trade is almost equal to that of tourism. In the years after World War Two wood was regarded an old-fashioned material, architects and designers preferred „new“ materials and therefore wood did not seem to have any future at all. The oil crisis in the 1970s, however, and the resulting study „Limits to Growth“ by the Club of Rome led to a change of direction: regrowing and renewable raw materials were favoured. People with a vision passed up the opportunity and thus laid the foundation for the current success of the timber industry. Many of those people have retired and the younger generation has taken over the business. In the current edition of LIGNOVISIONEN „Timber Industry in Austria“ those personalities who are responsible for today’s success of wood have their turn to speak. Their memoirs should be a reminder to the younger generation to handle their legacy with care. Download
